THANKFUL – GRATEFUL – APPRECIATIVE

I decided today to investigate today these three words Thankful, Grateful and appreciative. I see them as very similar words to me so I looked up the definition of all three.

thank·ful/ˈTHaNGkfəl/Learn to pronounceadjective

  1. pleased and relieved.”they were thankful that the war was finally over”Similar: relieved pleased glad grateful Opposite:disappointed
    • expressing gratitude and relief.”an earnest and thankful prayer”

grate·ful/ˈɡrātfəl/Learn to pronounceadjective

  1. feeling or showing an appreciation of kindness; thankful.”I’m very grateful to you for all your help”Similar: thank fulfilled with gratitude appreciative indebted obliged obligated under obligation in your debt beholden Opposite:ungrateful
    • ARCHAIC received or experienced with gratitude; welcome.”enjoying the grateful shade

ap·pre·cia·tive/əˈprēSH(ē)ədiv/Learn to pronounceadjective

  1. feeling or showing gratitude or pleasure.

Once I look at the definitions of the three words it is starting to look more clear. Being thankful for something is more of a feeling. Being grateful or appreciative for something is much more of an action. Leading right into having gratitude for something.

Here is a question to you all. Do you have a gratitude list, a thankful list or a an appreciation list. Do you have all three or just one. What is the difference between the three words to you all.

  1. I have a gratitude list in my journal. I suppose it’s a mix of thankful and gratitude, but i try to think of it as maintaining an attitude of awareness of the good things even if there’s not appreciative actions to go along with everything I’m thankful/grateful for.
